Crews Work at Downtown 2 Alarmer   By Firefighter III/EMT-B Ryan Fuller March 6, 2010   Just after lunch Structure 3-1 was dispatched for a reported garage fire at the corner of S. Bentz Street and Gaither Alley. First arriving, Chief 20 advised of heavy Fire showing. Engine 22 arrived laying out, as Engine Tanker 34 supplied them. Chief 3-2 arrived and established the command. Command reported that he had approximately 4 to 5 garages on fire with exposures and requested the Box and safety dispatch. This brought Engine 12 and Tower 1 to the call with 10 personal. While responding command advised that he now had heavy fire to the rear of a house at 229 West South Street and requested the 2nd alarm. Engine 12 laid out from a South St and Degrange St and preceded to 229 West South St. Engine 12 arrived and stretched an attack line to division 1 of the structure. The lineman on Engine 12 meets up with Rescue Squad 3 where they found heavy fire conditions in an enclosed porch to the rear and extending to the house. The fire was quickly knocked as crews began opening up and checking for extension. After it was confirmed that the fire was out the crew took the line back out and to the rear of the garage to assist with mop up and overhaul. Crews operated for about 2 hours before returning.
